With the release of Life on the Limb EP, The Boxcar Suite brings a new feel to a classic genre. Lush with addicting progressions, huge pop choruses, and an indie rock attitude, the record boasts the aesthetic of alternative rock anthems. Though the songs are diverse from one another, there is a glue that holds it all together much like a concept album would. Most importantly, the record never loses sight of the emotional platform great songs are built from.
The first single, “Room Full of Cowards”, is an instant indie rock classic. Complete with an upbeat swing, and an overall fun classic punk feel, the song hits hard and doesn’t let go.
“The theme of this song is 'the danger of letting loose in the wrong place at the wrong time.' It's as much a party anthem as a cautionary tale. Being in a band that plays a lot of bars, we all tend to observe some interesting behavior. Almost every night you see someone take the revelry a little too far...or way too far. The narrative here is about the latter but rather than go into details, we'll let the listener recall their own story that follows,” explains songwriter Tim Prichard of the bands single.
Although the single speaks volumes for the album, to get a real understanding of where The Boxcar Suite is coming from, it should be heard in its entirety.
“Our previous release, Across the Vast & Deep, essentially documents the transformation of a folk rock act into a more progressive rock and roll band with more emphasis on instrumentation and sonic texture. Life on the Limb is sort of the lost last chapter to Across the Vast & Deep. Not so much cutting room floor material as work that just hadn't been fully realized at the time of the former's release. It's eclectic and demonstrates the progression between the last full length and the one that is being recorded now. While we feel like the songs complement one another and create a trip of a listening experience, they are all pretty different,” says Prichard of the bands evolution is songwriting.
The Boxcar Suite formed around the release of vocalist and guitarist Tim Pritchard's solo effort It Shall Be Revealed. The album was recorded with several brief lineups, the last performing under the name Floods which featured current Boxcar Suite bassist Phil Caviness, Tod Weidner of Shrug and The Motel Beds on guitar and Daniel Pritchard of Bonneville on drums.
As Bonneville and The Motel Beds started filling their schedules, Pritchard and Caviness recruited Trevor Bell, formerly of After the Accident, on drums and began rehearsing as a three-piece. Realizing that many of the arrangements on It Shall Be Revealed demanded a dedicated lead guitarist, the band invited former collaborator Tony Moore to join and complete the lineup.
The group quickly developed from essentially a singer-songwriter backing band to full on rock and roll outfit, working collaboratively on material that would become the first full length album Across the Vast & Deep with producer and Motel Beds guitarist Darryl Robbins.
Having hit a collaborative stride by the time the first full length was released, The Boxcar Suite started recording a follow up immediately. Among the first sessions were four tracks that came together quickly and comprise 2016's Life on the Limb EP which precedes the follow up full length.
The Boxcar Suite has already played the likes of the Miami Vally Music Festival, multiple times at The Dayton Music and Art Film Festival, and had success with college radio airplay on their own WUDR University of Dayton and with NPR affiliate WYSO. Prichard and the band are always writing new material and are consistently focused on what’s next in terms of releases and live performances.
As Prichard himself puts it, “This band will always do what we do, continuing to explore new territory and defy musical categorization, other than rock and roll in the truest sense. Rock and roll is beyond definition. It's a way of playing music and living life. Life on the Limb is just a taste of what the band has been cooking up and we hope everyone enjoys it.”
The Life on the Limb is now available for streaming and download on most major digital outlets, and the band is planning a continued tour around the Midwest along with regular gigging around the Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky tri-state area.
