Artist Biography
Luna Blanca, based in Bocholt, Germany, was founded at the beginning of the millennium by acoustic lead guitarist Richard Hecks. The other mainstay of the group is pianist Helmut Graebe, who joined the group just before they recorded the first album, and now co-writes the music with Hecks. Both on record and in concert they add other musicians as needed to create their sound with drums, percussion, bass, one or more acoustic rhythm guitars, organ, occasional vocalizing, etc. On the last four albums, Hecks and Graebe have been joined by rhythm guitarist Bino Dola (a flamenco player much respected throughout Europe) and Clemens Paskert (who adds bass, percussion and additional keyboards). Paskert, who runs Capitol Sound Studios where the CDs were recorded, also serves as arranger and co-producer with Hecks.
"El Dorado Best World Album 2012" (ZMR Music Awards, New Orleans May 2013)
Helmed by classical guitarist Richard Hecks, Luna Blanca has become one of the most popular nouveau flamenco groups in the world. Their 2012 release, El Dorado, was the recipient of the Best World Album award by Zone Music Reporter for that year, and it’s likely that the latest musical confection, Pirates Bay, will receive similar accolades and recognition. In addition to outstanding performances, this music overflows with joy, adventure, and a strong sense of fun. Guest artists are Uwe Gronau on organ on two tracks, Davina-Carolin on piano on one track, and Gundy and Davina-Carolin the singing mermaids on the only track that includes vocals. Through careful sound engineering, each song tells a mystical story with various details.
Press Release
Who would have thought that a group of German musicians would rise to the top as one of the most popular nouveau-flamenco bands in the world? Guitarist Richard Hecks and company have done just that, and this Best of Luna Blanca collection clearly demonstrates why. Beautiful, infectious, energetic, soaring, danceable, rhythmic, warm, peaceful, optimistic, and accessible. This Best of collection will take you on a musical adventure to places with brilliant blue skies, warm sandy beaches, plenty of time to relax, and friendly people to party with. You might also encounter a pirate, a singing mermaid, lost treasures, and a desperado as he goes down in a hail of gunfire. Luna Blancas 2012 release, El Dorado, was the recipient of Zone Music Reporters Best World Album award for that year, and Pirates Bay was named as one of the 20 Favorite Albums of 2014 by MainlyPiano.com. The fifteen tracks on the Best of Luna Blanca were selected from those two albums as well as Obsession (2012), Provence (2010) and Guitar Island (2006).
