Artist Biography
Richard Tyler Epperson is a twenty-nine year old multi-instrumental artist from Salt Lake City, Utah. Richard started playing bass guitar at age twelve with the help of his father and two older brothers. At age fifteen he taught himself to play the piano after receiving a keyboard as a gift. Richard began writing and recording instrumental pieces soon after. He later played in bands throughout his late teens and early twenties as a bass or rhythm guitarist. In his mid twenties, Richard began focusing on his own songwriting and creating his own style. In 2013 with assistance on drumming and mixing, Epperson wrote, produced, and played all of the instruments on his debut album "Falling Between the Stars". Richard’s music has been described as “reminiscent of classic John Mayer, Bob Marley, Jason Mraz and Bruno Mars”. Richard has been praised for his “strong voice and compelling tension between the acoustic and electronic sounds” in his songs. Following the release of his debut album Richard played multiple shows across the state of Utah. Richard also performed on local broadcasts on KUTV News and Park City TV. Richard played live acoustically on local radio station KXRK. Richard has just recorded his follow-up album “Hourglass” which was released on April 8th 2014.

Question:
How did this album come about?
Answer:
I started thinking about doing a 2nd album pretty soon after I released my 1st album “Falling Between The Stars”. The majority of my 1st album was written at the time of recording. I would just start messing around on the keyboard or guitar and hit record and see where the song would take me. That was a good way for me to be creative and to explore different sounds, but that also made a lot of the songs not have a strong enough foundation to play acoustically. I’m a solo musician, so when I play live it’s usually just me and an acoustic guitar. So for this new album “Hourglass” I started every song by recording the acoustic guitar first, then I built the song around that. Even though the songs began with the acoustic guitar, I still tried to experiment with different sounds on songs like: Like Always, Lights and Waste. With other songs like: Hourglass, Beautiful Day and The Life (Fall On Me) I tried to keep the less is more mentality and not take away from the feel of the songs by over-complicating things with too many instruments. The name for the album came from one of the last songs I wrote for the album, Hourglass. I had about 7 or 8 songs fully recorded and was preparing the songs to be mixed. Listening back to the songs, I started to realize a lot of them had lines or hidden messages about how fast time goes by and about trying to find happiness in the short time we have. Those thoughts inspired the song Hourglass and the name seemed to be fitting for me at this point in my life. Time goes by so fast and we all get caught up in daily life stresses that take us away from our dreams and the things we care about. The more I grow up and the older I get, the more potent that thought gets. If you stop to think about it, the hourglass is always running and it’s important to make sure you’re living life the way you want to be living it. I know that sounds like such an easy concept and it should be an easy thing to do but it’s something I struggle with it and I think most people do too. That feeling and message is why this album means so much to me. Having a full time job and other obligations, finding time to write and play music can be extremely difficult. This album Hourgalss has helped me realize how important it is to always fight for your dreams. I hope the album helps inspire people to do the same and not hold off on following theirs.
