Artist Biography
It’s hard to think alt-country in Melbourne without thinking Low Rent. After six years of slogging it out around the big city this sweet little band, with its large, faithful following, has scorched a burning brand on every urban cow-punk’s heart.
Headed up by singer/songwriter Dan Swan – the group also includes father Mike and brother Tim – Low Rent has gone from a country roots three piece to a six member outfit with Mike Landells on lead guitar, Regan Wood on drums and Cynthia Gallie supporting vocals. With musical interests spanning many genres, these desperados come together in Low Rent via a common love for country music.
While their sound carries within it some dust from the American plains, the original songs, entwined harmonies and anguished lyrics reaching through to a ghost-world of bad memories, make for a never-been-heard-before experience. The legend goes that they dug up a flat-top guitar from a grave on the prairie and kept the original tuning.
Following on from the debut EP Waiting to Fall, their new album Words on the Wind was recently launched at a sold-out show at the Thornbury Theatre May 25th, 2013 with special guest violinist, Luke Moller. The 9 songs – all originals – range from mandolin-tinged ballads to all out drums ‘n’ guitar rock – from the maudlin to the downright merry.
